The questions to answer provided by Hollan:
What did you do?
We studied studying. We looked at UP and found that it was ineffective and tried to find a way to use it that would be more effective, and from that, we decided to learn how to help people study better. The current technology didn't match up with how you can use the system. UP was being used mainly as a review system, so we decided to look at how people study to help facilitate that that. We studied people studying for upcoming exams. We looked at people from different schools. We studied people in the context of studying. We let the them do what they do and if something interesting came up we would stop them. We would also stop them to find the history of artifacts.
Why did you do it?
Because Up wasn't being used like we thought. UP could be a really effective, so using Up would be best at home. We didn't have have access to a community of people using UP at home for review so we just looked at studying. Three of our users used UP, but it didn't play any role in there review. Not much being used in the UP realm, so not much to study. Up has technological limitations. Could only really be used retroactively at home. It was basically a system for information capture and distribution. So, we looked at how students do those things now. Up was basically a automatically archived white-board and didn't provide much data.
What did you find out?
Studying consisted of access to media and gathering it, making it, capturing it, organizing it, consolidating it conceptually because what everyone wanted to do was bring every instance of the hippo and writing it down and memorization process by coming in contact with it. We found breaddowns with access, and Ta didn't give outline to all, and organization problems like cluttered desktop and finding things. Breakdowns in communication. Bringing together student to student and learning how other students are understanding it and using that for mutual gain. Access to media is the main problem. Social and cultural problem were a huge part of what caused the communication breakdowns. Cultural norms are a problem. Not knowing other people and therefore not talking to them. And the self-reliance. Time limitations.
