It is sloppy to combine all quotes under a broad Issues topic. We cannot solve the "Info Capture" or "Media Exchange," rather each issue is a platform for what we are actually trying to solve.
Issues slides should made into component slides that define a specific area of focus:
- quotes showing specific breakdowns of an activity.
- quotes that promote inclusion of certain activities.
Solutions under each of the umbrella "Issues" can then adress their own focus:
- See Example Below,
Issues of Information Capture:
"Difficult to write notes during lecture"
•u4: prof goes through powerpoint too fast
•u11: difficult to capture everything prof says aloud
•u1: having to handwrite notes prevents comprehension during lecture
"Students want access to all lecture media, not just the slides"
•g3: prof uses 3d molecule visuallization software which is not caputred
•u4: prof use chalk board sometimes to draw diagrams
g3: my teachers annotations on slides are useful
•u3: lecture slides do not fully represent content of lecture
Issues of Media Exchange:
"Students need access to clarification"
g1: i borrowed someones notes before and it didn't help because I couldn’t get any clarification
•u6: users scans through u5s material looking for things he doesnt understand before he goes home with material
"Students want easy access to TA media
•
•g1: user will email ta and ask for media he may not have gotten
•u5: if i dont go to section, i dont get tas material
"Students are willing share their own media"
•u5: i would give my notes to anyone that asked, but no one asks
•u7: i would give my friends my notes
•g1: anything user has other user would like to borrow and/or look at
Issues with Communication
"Students want group interaction"
•U11: "Student speak is better than professor speak.”
•G2: "Its helpful for me to explain my homework to my friends."
•U4: "It is helpful to study with classmates."
•U2: "I like studying in a group"
•U7: discussion instigates clarification
Catch 22?
- students tend to only communitcate with people they already know,
- students can only get to know each other by communicating,
•
U2: "I dont talk to students I dont know"
•U7: "I dont really get to know people in class."
•G1: "I usually study alone, but now that I know someone in class, a group session would be helpful"
Solution: "A framework for intiating communication across students"
Profile System
Get to know your fellow classmates. possibly integrated with facebook?
Class Discussion
Class wide discussion boards that shares helpful Q/A between students, Prof. , and TA.
Shared class space
An real-time virtual space that promotes open communication and media exchange with all students using the system to study for the same class
A "Thank You!" currency
- Implement a system that rewards students who assist others with a "thank you" currency (social capital) that they can exchange for assistance at the time they need it.
- recognition can be given to highest "thank you" balance in the class/school
- This provides a small incentive to help people they don't know, there by initiating communication and creating opportunities for group interaction.
