U7- Acctng. student SDSU
-studying for accounting final
-highlighter, textbook, review sheet (outline of all things she needs to know for final)
Structure of Outline
has all topics covered in class but each is within a certain category of test question
3 types: -multiple choice
-short answer (show work)
-calculation
-only reads topics in textbook or powerpoint that are outlined in this review sheet
-with the exception of final studying, she only reads when she does HW because she doesnt really go to class that often
-uses textbook to look for figures to compare HW questions to
-"accounting is boring to read about"
-only reads actual text within book if the figure is unclear to connect contextually
-skims text usually because finds content dry
-when studying, uses textbook to find sentences that explain the subtitle
-only looks at textbook right before test because otherwise wouldnt remember because of lack of interest
-while reading book she is highlighting sentences that define a certain topic
-does a lot of skimming
-types up all of the highlighted annotations she takes in book and prints out
-says that the process of highlighting then going back through reading highlighted notes and typing up helps her remember
-reviews day of test at school
-powerpoint posted on "BlackBoard"
-copied notes from powerpoint into notebook verbatim because "rewriting helps me remember"
-the more she reads and writes it helps her make sense of it
-writing prevents speed reading
-doesnt always use powerpoint but the first test was hard because of unexpected conceptual question so now uses powerpoint
HW manager
-software program that complements book, HW questions and students post answers
when studying
-looks over all HW throughout course sequentially over and over
-HW Manager posts the right answers so has access to step-by-step order to achieve the right answer
Has to rememorize formulas for test
-not difficult formulas simple math
-not so much memorization of formulas but when to use what numbers where
-accounting is is a formulaic process
-uses both HW Manager and textbook to fit formulas into concepts
-uses flashcard system to memorize formulas
-process of making flashcards is more helpful than actually flashing (concept of reproduction)
-makes flashcards on day of test to study in library before exam
Studying with classmate(s)
-meets with a friend an hour before the test to go over last minute stuff
-i.e. clarify something she doesnt know, get good explanations from friend
-usually there is something that you get that someone else doesnt and vice versa
-meeting up and discussing things that she should have studied but didnt --> goes over these concepts at the last minute
-same person that she does the in class assignments with
-smart girl in class "I should study with her" says that shes smart because she always answers questions the teacher asks to the class
Do you ever study with more than one person?
-only if there is more than 1 person worth studying with
-doesnt really get to know people in class
-says she probably wouldnt use a chat oom/ message board that was only with classmates but thinks other people would
-already has an effective studying technique for herself
-something like a chat room wouldnt work well for a math based class
-would use if it had a video of someone doing a problem out of the book or homework
-"I feel like im smart enough to do it on my own"
-not worth time to meet with classmates
-
Class Structure
-small class no section/ no TA/ taught by a GRAD STUDENT
-never goes to Office Hours because she has a good grade
-doesnt feel like she really needs help
-not the office hour type of person
- went once during calculus b/c wanted to clarify a few things before exam but only time in college
-2 hours a week including class time/ homework/ and studying/ reading
-3 hours spent studying for exam so far...another 3 probably day of test
-class meets 2 days a week/ usually only goes to 1 because there are in class assignments otherwise may not go at all
-only emails teacher for scheduling conflicts or bugs with HW Manager
-doesnt take notes in class
-learns A LOT when doing the homeworks
-learns little things in class like what acronyms or initials mean
-listens for things that sound important in class
-book is repetitive
